Windows Phone doesn’t suffer from an app gap in India : Microsoft

Joseph Landes, General Manager (Developer and Platform Evangelism) at Microsoft India, has stated in an interview with The Hindu that there is a “zero app gap in Windows Phone versus competition”.

He mentioned that the company is not far behind in the apps development space.

“We are not far behind. Of course there are certain apps like Candy Crush which is not available on the Windows Phone Store but if you look at the apps created by Indian companies or top brands, we have zero app gap versus competition”

Landes focused on security, that though the Windows Store does not feature as many app as Android or iOS but what differentiate Windows Store from its competitor is that its apps are malware free.

He also mentioned that another misconception with Windows Phone has to do with number of apps. Microsoft currently have 300,000 apps available for download. There is no doubt that the Google Play Store and the iOS have more apps but the question is how many apps do you really need? How many apps that perform the same task do you really need?

About the state of app ecosystem in India, Landes mentioned that Microsoft has invested heavily in the start-up ecosystem in the country with recent partnership with Reliance Industries’ GenNext ventures that will see the introduction of innovation hubs.

We surely will like to see many many great innovation come out of these initiatives in terms of building a great app in the times to come.

According to Microsoft, several Indian companies and retailers have embraced the Windows Phone platform by launching native app. As the platform gains momentum in the country more and more organizations will start offering dedicated clients to Windows Phone.

So readers, Do you think that Windows Phone Store suffers from an app gap in India? What crucial apps are still missing from the platform? Share your thoughts in the comments.
